With a new album – The May King & His Paper Crown – in the works (due around March 2012), Brisbane indie rock fourpiece Drawn From Bees have offered up an early single: Of Walls & Teeth. The release comes with two versions of the track, the original and a radio edit, plus a pair of B-sides.
The single itself demonstrates two of the bands strengths; slick guitar-driven melodies and lyrics laden with imagery and metaphor. Frontman Dan James delivers his lines with a modicum of emotional force, held aloft by breathy backing vocals and a steady drum-line. The B-sides, Dusty Midnight Cowboy and Dreams Don’t Lie offer up some contrast; both relying more heavily on the acoustic guitar and a gentle vocal performance, the latter bordering on mournful.
In a recent interview, frontman Dan James admitted that the band plan to continue writing for the new album until the end of the year, so it’s anyone’s guess just how representative the single will be of the record’s overall sound. It is, however, a strong enough release to generate a few shivers of excitement and anticipation.
